The Game of Family Business – Who’s on Your Team?

During this live, interactive recording of the podcast you will learn:

  1. The balancing act of mentoring the next generation.
  2. The long term impact for your family of partnering with the right advisory team.
  3. Why sometimes, the team that helped you get where you are, can’t help you get where you want to be.
  4. How to identify the key attributes of a great advisor.

This week’s guests include:

Sam Sherstad*

Family Business Owner, Retired, Woodmark International, LP

Sam Sherstad started Woodmark International, LP in 1972 as a small part of a publicly traded company in wholesale lumber. In 1973, he began traveling Southeast Asia to import wood-building products as the sales manager of Woodmark and another wholesale distribution company. In 1984 Sam purchased a portion of Woodmark. In 1990, Sam made the move to purchase the rest of the company and become the sole owner.

Woodmark International evolved into a major US wholesale supplier of stair parts used in 2-story home construction. Sam’s son took the lead to form a new company specializing in exterior iron fencing and railings under Sam’s direction.  Sam sold Woodmark International under the watchful eye of his trusted financial team, led by Dianna Parker, and is now happily retired. Sam’s son continues to run and grow his own company, which has far exceeded the sales volume of Woodmark International.

Sam and his wife have two sons and a daughter. They enjoy spending time in their vacation home located in the Colorado Rockies and actively serve to raise money for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society blood cancer research and Rotary International. Sam especially enjoys supporting the Rotary Student Foreign Exchange program via leadership training. Sam is most thankful for his family’s good life, and for the guidance and support they’ve received from Dianna and their financial team to make it all happen.
